My coworker and I sometimes sign to each other when we go clubbing because we both know ASL. Her brother is deaf and I took a class on ASL and have done some research on my own. We are both hearing people and only know how to sign through circumstance. We mostly use it when we can’t hear each other in the club, or when we want to discuss something without other people knowing (i.e. signing “help” if a creepy dude is hitting on one of us and we need an out.) Is it considered appropriation to use sign language for our own use even though we don’t need to use it to communicate?
Loveliest Starkids versed in ASL…
I’m working on my sign language version of “Status Quo.” This is my attempt at the first verse and first chorus. Could anyone look this over and tell me if it looks right? Below is the translation I’m signing. Also, it’s supposed to go with the song, so the timing is weird (and, like, I sign “show” about fifty times).
THANK YOU. I want to get this perfect so I can show it to the Starkids. :D
